YOUR THYROID GLAND

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits low on the front of your neck. It secrets T4 primarily and a little T3, these hormones impact every cell in your body. Thyroid hormones are one of the only hormones in your body that has receptors on every cell. The thyroid regulates metabolism, energy levels, mood, digestion, and fertility. A typical adult thyroid gland weighs about 25 grams and is about 4 centimeters wide and 2 centimeters tall. The function of the thyroid gland is to take iodine, found in many foods, and convert it into thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones are then released into the bloodstream where they travel to every tissue in the body. The thyroid gland produces two main hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which help regulate the body's metabolism. Thyroid disorders can occur when there is an imbalance of these hormones in the body.
